Adonis

Adonis (Heb. Adonai), the mythical lover of Venus, was killed by a boar, and the goddess turned him into a flower of the colour of his blood. He was allowed to quit Hades for six months in every year for the purpose of consoling his admirer. General lamentations marked the anniversary of his death, which is supposed to have typified the passage from summer to winter. He is identified with the Phoenician Thammuz and the Egyptian Osiris.
