Abergavenny

Abergavenny (sometimes pronounced, Abergenny), a market-town in Monmouthshire, 14 miles W. of Monmouth, situated at the junction of the Usk and the Gavenny, and supposed to be the Roman Gobannium. It contains the ruins of a Norman castle and a Benedictine priory, and has a fine stone bridge over the Usk. Its manufactures are shoes and woollen goods, but large coal and iron-works are the chief source of its prosperity.
