AEdile

AEdile, the name given to a Roman magistrate whose business it was to look after the roads, aqueducts, sewers, weights, measures, and public worship. Originally there were two aidiles, later the number was increased to four, and Julius Caesar added two more. The term is now sometimes applied to the President of the Board of Works, who is a member of the British Government and whose business it is to look after public buildings, etc.
